This series is a tribute to Lisa Frank, who I consider to be perhaps the most influential artist of my prepubescent existence. The moment I saw her back-to-school folder adorned with two yellow puppies gorging themselves on a life-size ice cream sundae, I knew I wanted to become an artist. At age eight I would spend hour after hour hoping to capture the vomit-inducing cuteness of her kittens, attempting to imitate every intricate rainbow calorie of her cupcakes. Unfortunately, as I grew older and life became more complicated, I ran into obstacles such as art history, taste, and the insatiable desire for slim thighs that kept me from pursuing my Technicolor destiny. After years of painting various pieces expressing primarily angst with a limited color palette, my craving for shades of pink and purple started to emerge once more. That’s why I’ve decided to revisit the more vivid days of my youth while at the same time applying the life lessons that every little girl living in mainstream America must learn at some point.
